In order for our students to achieve independence in the real the world, it starts in the classroom. The classrooms have to be geared towards values that help our students succeed. These values that we promote should be responsibility, respect, empathy, critical thinking, adaptability, correct communication, group collaboration, accountability, and personal integrity. However, we have no room for coddling, the victimhood mentality, or the elimination of difficulties in our students lives.
We have to get our students into the community as soon as possible. We should always encourage acts of service and kindness to those in our community from the younger generations. Those experiences allow them to see the world through a lens of selflessness. Young students will learn quickly the world does not revolve around them.
I believe allowing students to take their outcome into their own hands benefits them immensely. For awhile most student organizations may have student leaders, but most of the work is done by the staff. We have to let students learn and discover what it is like to have decision making power. They will succeed and fail which will teach them so much more than words ever will.
